Heat Wave

What, we are in a Heat Wave all through the Northwest area.

Yes, heat in the low 90's have broken out and we have to take measures to reduce the heat getting in.

So, to help with this we have installed our sun-screens on the the front (we are facing south), we have placed our Reflectix between window and screens, as this reduces most of the heat getting thru.

Cost $25 for Reflectix R 21 50-sq ft Unfaced Reflective Roll Insulation (24-in W x 25-ft L). It can be bought online or thru Big Box stores

We have been using reflectix since 2007 in our Alfa, especially since we lived in Az. It is amazing how much heat is reduced by placing it on the outside Vs. inside. And of course our current prices are well over 5 years old and it is time to replace due to there age.

Photos well, not really, our first storm in the area

Mountain Home, Id. Elks Lodge

We have arrived, just where ? Mountain Home, ID. Elks Lodge #2276,

Address: 325 S 3rd W St, Mountain Home, ID 83647
Phone: (208) 587-9926

They have 6 sites with 30 amps and 2 more with 50 amps, water on site with a common dump. We setup in #1 or really #1 1/2, as we moved over 1/2 a space for satellite connection and great grass area for Dakota and Tilly. Dakota, loved the area as she played until she was plum tired out. After 2 long walks we all fell asleep.

We took a walk around town, stopped in at “Apple Barrel Deli And Bakery”. We scored as they had tables setup outside and were very paw friendly. Devon, came out with water bowls for both.

5 out of 5 Stars for food and friendliness:

Susan and I both had home made soups and 1/2 sandwich. Yum on the soup and sandwich.

For traveling along the highways, we use a web site titled Mile – by – Mile

Mile By Mile – Link

I like this web site instead of Goggle Earth or Maps Satellite view. Mile by Mile gives you descriptions along a specific highway.
For the highways we were on, it stated “Limited Service”. Boy, that was an understatement.

We left Pahrump on Tuesday, May 1. Our goal was the Prospector Hotel and Casino, in Ely, Nv. Boy, were we surprised when we arrived and found the Rv park had closed just 2 weeks earlier.

We discuss the options and decided to add an additional 125 miles to the day and arrived in Wells, Nv., for the night.

Susan called and arranged for a 1 night stay at the Angel Lake Rv Park, for $35.00 Easy access as all sites are pull thru. I had decided to do it this way as the temperatures were expected to be in the 20’s and 30’s do to a cold front moving thru.

5_2_Travel Day Map

We awoke to 30 degrees in the morning, but as the sun rose so did the temperature. Susan drove the first leg of the trip and we switched out near Twin Falls.

One thing we both agreed, this was a $500 day in Fuel. OUCH....

Our fuel schedule:
Start of the trip = Coolidge, Az.

May 1st.,  Amargosa, Nv., 77 gals @ $3.189 = $244.48

May 1st., Wells, Nv., 66 gals @ $3.48 = $228.50

Distance we have traveled since Yuma, Az. = 1123

Day 2

As we continued on our journey on Arizona Hwy 93, this highway is also known as the "Killer Highway", due in part because it's the way to Las Vegas and of course the stupid drivers.

I spied some interesting photos ops. Only issue, is the spots on the windshield - Bugs. So, just overlook the spots:

We're stopped. And you woke me for that?

Mommy, daddy won't let me in his lap while you are driving...

Susan and I switched driving back in Wickenburg. When we arrived in Kingman, it was time for me to take over: Now Susan was on the camera, taking photos.

We settled in at a Thousand Trails Campground just outside Las Vegas. As TT goes this place is tight, with just enough room for our slide. It is also not level, so be careful. Many places are taken over by VERY LONG term Rv's and campers.

Good thing we will only be spending 1 night, anymore and well let’s just say – not worth the effort.

While we were walking round we spied 3 other Alfa's, no one was out and around, so we do not know who they belong to.

Day 1 of our New Adventure

We just spent 3 nights at Canyon Vistas visiting Kathy, Wayne & Tungor. We have known them since 2013, and met them  in Montgomery, IL.

image

Along the way we stopped in to visit Jo & Vonis, great friends and Alfa knowledgeable person.

During our stay, I managed to repair our sensor for our awning. The older style (reed switch) is hard to find, but somehow I managed and scored a direct hit. Well not a complete hit, but I managed to make it work. After a brief test and setting, the awning came in with the wind.

On Wed., we were off on a road trip. Where you might ask? Well it has been many years since we were at Tortilla Flats along the Apache Trail. We spent a quiet time driving out and seeing the scenery along the way. We stopped and had lunch. Susan and I shared a burger along with onion rings, then later shared a small cup of ice cream.

Once back, we started cleaning up, as we were leaving the next day. We decided to leave as early as possible, due to Phoenix traffic. Guess we were excited, as we were up around 5 ish. I walked DaGirls and Susan finished up packing and bringing in the slide.
We escaped at 5:40 and were off. Route took us onto US-60, then to AZ-202, then up onto the Loop 101. We made it to I-17, where we went north to AZ-74, Carefree Hwy., heading west.

We managed to get to that point in a little over an hour. Then onto US/AZ 60, where we are now on US-93.

So as we (Susan, Tilly, Dakota & me), travel on our way,  I’ll leave you with this small photo which is will be posted on our Butt wall, Thanks to Double D’s, for helping us start it.

Taos New Mexico–Countdown to AIBF

Orilla CG_Rv_Profile

Now along the way into town, we went the backway in. Dirt road, steep hills, driving next to the gorge, plus beautiful views. Yes a car can traverse this route, slow and easy is all it takes.

This back way in would take us to the Royal Gorge on Hwy 64. A real bridge, yes a real bridge that spans over the gorge and you can walk or drive over it. Of course driving in, allows you to come into Taos. Walking of course allows for good PHOTOS ops.
Which we took advantage of:

Ok, as we enter into Taos, we saw signs about an auto show along with produce market. We located a free parking space, and then Susan, DaGirls and I went in-search of photos;

Thinking of you Gary

One of the things I like about Taos ?   PAW FRIENDY, yes you heard me right. We located cafes, brew pubs, and restaurants with dog friendly patios.

Along the way, I spotted the Brew Pup, that is, wait, wait for it, paw friendly…..another big YEA. This is a place we are coming back to.

Today I selected  5 Star Burger place. The reviews on it did not let us down and neither did the restaurant let Dakota and Tilly down either.  By the time we were done, home-made puppy biscuits for them, bowl of ice cold water, a sampling of our lunch, YUM, and for desert? They had larger cups of ICE CREAM than Susan or I.  We will come again. YEA.

As we walked around the plaza on Saturday, a produce market was in full swing. We were amazed at the produce being hawked around the plaza.

Finally, as we were leaving the plaza, we spotted a ride. Needless to say, we could not resists:

On DaRoad to AIBF–Day 28 and Counting

We have landed in the "Land of Enchantment", New Mexico, Tucumcari to be exact. One of the things we did entering Tucumcari, was have the oil changed out on the Beast. I did not realized, that this beast takes 7 gallons of oil. You heard correctly 7 gallons. On Wednesday, I noticed a Boss Shop on Hwy I-40, using Google maps. So I called ahead and talked to David, he explained the shop is open till 11 pm, does oil till 10 pm.

We left Liberal, Ks in the morning and the second stop of the morning was Boss Shop. Total out the door - $205. So the Beast is running on fresh lubrication. Yippee, I didn't have to do it. You may ask what was the first stop? Diesel at $2.399 / gallon. Susan whipped in and we took on 45 gallons for about $110.

Dalhart, Texas - First Real City in the Great State

Entering into New Mexico
But what is on the horizon ?

But not to worry, it's a dry heat.

We have landed, where you asked ?

A placed called Cactus Rv, right on Route 66 .You can read about Cactus:

HERE

One of the first items of the day, walk Dakota and Tilly, both were very good for today's drive, so they deserved a long walk outside in the 85 degree weather.

Next we walked down to 2 of the museums. We were told only 2 blocks - Susan got her 10,000 steps in.

The first museum: Mike can you Guess?

I believe by the photos you can tell what type of museum this one is.

The second Museum is called Tucumcari Historic Museum, we arrived with only 30 minutes left before closing. They explained there are 5 buildings and would take longer. But, they said come on back tomorrow to see the rest, no additional charge. We started with the main house and only did the first 2 floors.

For dinner, we went to the local Western Tack store, where they have a BBQ in the back, we met Jimmie as he was closing up, but would not turn us away. We ended up spending a little more than we wanted.

Susan and I both agreed, WHERE IS ANDY'S BBQ? Yep, we have been really spoiled by Andy and his BBQ skills. The BBQ was good, but not like Andy's. The beans did not have much flavor, the potato salad was definitely the best and the homemade bread good.

Dakota is missing Mr. Andy, she wants to know why we could not bring him along as a playmate/toy.
